Future Dubai: Manmade Mountains to Create Rain on Demand

The UAE is no stranger to ambitious mega-projects, but this one is mountainous!

A man-made mountain development project was recently announced in a bid to maximize rainfall in our arid desert region. Still in the early stages, the UAE is consulting with the U.S.-based National Center for Atmospheric Research to study the idea.

A major factor in rainfall, mountains force warm air to rise and cool, thus creating clouds. These will then be seeded – a process where chemicals such as silver or potassium iodide are added to clouds in the form of ice crystals, boosting rainfall.
