In an aim to learn more about the region’s history, excavations were carried out by the Department of Tourism and Antiquities in Umm Al Quwain at the archaeological site of Ed-Dur.
According to Alia al-Ghafli, the Director General of the Department, treasures uncovered included coins in a style derived from the coins of Alexander the Great.
Called “Arabian Alexanders,” these coins circulated in the eastern Arabian peninsula around the beginning of the Christian era. The discovery several years ago of a stone mould for making coins at Mleiha confirmed that some of this coinage was minted in UAE.
