Mark Zuckerberg certainly thinks so, having just launched Facebook’s new augmented reality, Camera Effects Platform. This might sound like a mindless copy of Snapchat’s story and camera features, but Zuckerberg says they’re laying the groundwork for their own ambitious Camera Effects Platform.
He sees Facebook’s platform as a precursor to future social ecosystems that will be accessed via virtual and augmented reality devices. Developers could make informational tools like overlaid suggestions, interactive games and mind-bending art.
Augmented reality devices could well be the future, but we’ll also see Facebook and tech companies being intermediaries to everything we do.
