Dubai Marina has a new resident

by Michael Polzella

There’s a shark in Dubai Marina. But don’t panic – it’s a friendly one. The brainchild of Dubai-based Ecocoast, WasteShark is a 1.5m device that swims along the water surface at 10km per hour, gathering plastic, algae, weeds and debris.

Operated manually or autonomously, it can carry up to 350kg of waste, taking the rubbish to shore to be emptied, before starting all over again.

Designed for calm inland waterways, the device can also collect around 180 litres of oil captured on the surface of the water. It’s the only shark I’d be happy to see in the water.
